Capella’s Competency-Based Education (CBE) model is designed to focus on outcomes rather than the traditional time-based academic model. In a traditional system, students move through a course based on a set schedule, typically completing assignments and exams at regular Capella Assessment intervals. However, CBE allows students to progress at their own pace, advancing when they can demonstrate that they have mastered specific competencies — or skills — in a subject area. In this model, Capella Assessments become the key mechanism through which students can prove they’ve achieved these competencies.
