I’ve been thinking about something lately. A couple of builders I know mentioned that preparing bids is starting to take more time than actually managing the projects. Between material price changes, labor adjustments, and double-checking quantities, it seems like estimating alone can eat up days.
One of them recently said he started using estimating services for builders because he was missing out on new opportunities simply due to time constraints. He felt like he was either rushing numbers or delaying bids, and neither option was good for business.
At the same time, I can understand why some builders prefer to keep everything in-house. You know your crew, your productivity rates, and your suppliers better than anyone. But with projects getting more detailed, I’m wondering if handling estimates solo is becoming unrealistic.
For those actually running construction jobs, what’s worked better for you? Keeping estimates internal or getting external support when workload increases? I’m genuinely curious how others are managing this without compromising accuracy.
