Data collection techniques used are surveys, interviews, observations, focus groups, experiments, questionnaires, and secondary data analysis. Surveys and questionnaires can help to gather standardized responses from several participants. Interviews can yield detailed information about opinion, experience, or motivation. The use of observation enables the researcher to observe behavior and/or events as they happen, and focus groups provide an opportunity for participants to discuss a topic in groups. Experiments can be helpful when scientists are interested in studying relationships between variables that can be controlled. Secondary data analysis uses data that has been collected previously (reports, databases, publications, organisational records). The selection of the best method will vary depending on the objective of the research and the resources that are available.
