Spent Three Months Building In House Before Finally Admitting We Needed a Software Development Agency

We are a small business and convinced ourselves we could manage the development of our new platform internally to save money. Three months in, missed deadlines and a half finished product later we swallowed our pride and reached out to a couple of software development agencies for quotes. The difference in pace and quality from week one was honestly embarrassing in hindsight. Should have made the call before we started rather than after wasting an entire quarter trying to figure it out ourselves.
Has anyone else gone down the in house route before switching to an agency? Would love to know what finally made you make the decision and whether you wished you had done it sooner.
